Success of New Day creates opportunities to Seize This Moment

With the success of the New Day Campaign came both challenges and opportunities. The challenges emerged from the increase in student enrollment and the demand for additional classroom space and staff to support double sections of each grade. The challenges became the Good Problem and the opportunity to Seize This Moment arrived with a matching grant from the Engelstad Family Foundation.

On December 26, 2017, the Sacred Heart Foundation received a letter from the Engelstad Family Foundation granting $2.5 million if Sacred Heart could match their grant with $500,000. Over the next four months, Sacred Heart reached out to all boards, councils, and committees seeking a green light to take up the challenge and to “wrap-it” around a $7 million campaign to build the school addition ($3 million), increase the People and Programs budget by $2 million, supplement the Building Fund by $500K, and strengthen our Scholarships and Endowments by $1.5 million.

On May 2, 2018, Sacred Heart launched the “Sieze This Moment” campaign by connecting with hundreds of Sacred Heart donors, alumni, businesses and friends.

By December 31, 2018, we had met our match challenge from the Engelstad Family Foundation. This meant that we could move forward with building designs, contracts and construction. The Sisters of Mount Saint Benedict Addition was constructed and dedicated on May 10, 2019, and a ribbon cutting celebration took place on August 28, 2019. Following the ribbon cutting, the playground and new addition was formally opened.

Members of the Chamber and East Grand Forks Mayor Steve Gander gathered with administration and Sacred Heart families to formally open the new school addition this fall.

By the start of this 2019-2020 school year we can report good news and challenges. The good news is that the addition dedicated to the Sisters of Mount St. Benedict is completed. However, we experienced cost overruns of $450,000 with the playground, classroom equipping, electronics and other items. The Sacred Heart Foundation, School and Parish are working strategically to eliminate this debt within three years. If you are interested in helping in this effort, contact the Sacred Heart Foundation.

There is further good news to report on the Seize This Moment Campaign. We have raised over $4.8M of our $7M goal in the first year of the campaign. Thank you! We will continue to build upon this success going forward.
